Lot 77

1817 N-13 R1 VG10. Several points sharper but there are two scratches in the field right of the main curl. The surfaces are smooth and there are no other defects. Glossy light olive and bluish steel. This cent was struck two times, and both strikes were reasonably well centered on the planchet. The first strike was normal but the coin failed to eject from the coining chamber and a new blank planchet was inserted on top of this struck cent. During the second strike the obverse die made a slightly shifted second impression on the obverse of this cent while the reverse (the hammer die) was pressed into the new planchet, thereby creating a new cent with a reverse brockage. The characteristic swelling associated with being a brockage maker is evident on the reverse of this piece. A neat mint error. Estimate Value $250 - UP
Ex Jules Reiver, Heritage 1/24/2006:19726-Jim Neiswinter Collection (includes the Reiver collection envelope and lot ticket).
