Lot 452

1808 S-277 R2 F15+. At least ten points sharper but the left third of the obverse is covered with fine scratches. The rest of the planchet is choice and the toning is an attractive frosty light to medium chocolate brown. Satiny flowline luster covers the protected areas on both sides, and the reverse has the eye appeal of a choice EF40 cent. LDS, Breen state IX. The die cracks on the reverse are strong, a small chip shows inside the D in UNITED, and clearly defined rim cud breaks show at the N and ED in UNITED. Star 1 is weak due to the die failure on the reverse, the so-called 12-star die state for this variety. Estimate Value $450 - UP
From the William Hamilton Collection.

Realized $480
