Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 109

Lot 441

1797 S-139 R1 G5. A couple points sharper but there are areas of fine corrosion on both sides. Slightly glossy olive brown and chocolate. M-LDS with die cracks on the obverse. This cent was struck three times. The first strike was off center 5-10%, the second was centered on the planchet but rotated about 20 degrees relative to the first (counterclockwise on the obverse, clockwise on the reverse), and another strike just nipped the planchet leaving a strongly impressed arc of dentils at K-7 on the reverse. Obvious undertype from the first strike shows on both sides, especially left of the lowest curl and at STATES which reads STASTATES. Another neat mint error that is visible to the unaided eye, and it comes with a nice provenance. Estimate Value $400 - UP
