Lot 422

1795 C-5b R4 No Pole with Thick Planchet VG10. Rather glossy steel brown and chocolate with lots of frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas on both sides. No roughness or verdigris, only light contact marks. The best identifying mark is a tiny spot of reddish brown toning on the 7 in the date. LDS with severe swelling under the bisecting die crack that slants across the reverse from the first T in STATES to the R in AMERICA. The date is weak (as usual on this variety) but it is readable, and LIBERTY is strong. Weight 119.9 grains, significantly heavier than the 84.0-grain standard for the normal thin planchet strikes of this die combination, which identifies this as having been struck on a planchet cut from a spoiled large cent. Estimate Value $750 - UP
Ex Tom Reynolds.

Realized $1,110
