Lot 386

1848 N-39 R5 PCGS Genuine Unc Details Damage. A frosty cent with traces of mint red showing but there is a collection of scrape marks at star 7 on otherwise choice surfaces. A vertical nick high on the neck is the only other notable mark. Attractive light steel brown with traces of faded mint red showing, mostly on the reverse, and hints of bluish steel overtone in protected areas. E-MDS. The fine early die lines over UNIT are weak but still visible. Struck on a clipped planchet affecting the dentils at stars 1-3 and the opposing ones at D-S. The dentils across from the clip are weakly struck, the so-called Blakesly effect that testifies to the authenticity of the mint error. Our grade is AU55 sharpness net EF40. Tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census. The attribution, Ellsworth provenance, Mint Error, and 2% Clipped Planchet features are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $750 - UP
