Lot 367

1825 N-5 R7 NGC Good Details, Obverse Scratched. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with slightly lighter highpoints on the obverse from a very light cleaning. No corrosion or verdigris and only a few light contact marks. The notable ones are a fine diagonal scratch from the rim over star 9 to the upper lip and a tiny planchet chip right of the bottom edge of the nose (as struck). The date is clear and the legends are easily readable although some of the legend outside the wreath has started to wear into the rim. Our grade is G4. Only 9 examples are known of this extremely rare die variety, and only 3 of those grade better than this piece. The 1825 N-5 variety is the rarest of the business strikes in the Middle Date Cent series (1816-1839). A rare opportunity for the serious collector of Middle Date Large Cents. The attribution and Mervis provenance are noted on the NGC label. Estimate Value $7,500 - UP
Ex Henry T. Hettger-Adam Mervis, Heritage 1/10/2014:2102-Dr. George Wilkins.
