Lot 275

1796 S-96 R6 Draped Bust PCGS Genuine. Sharpness F12 or slightly better but covered with fine granularity. No verdigris, but there are some contact marks. These include myriad faint hairline scratches on the obverse, strongest in the field behind the portrait, plus two dull dents in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon. Slightly glossy dark olive brown with lighter chocolate and steel brown toning on the devices. The date and legends are complete and clear. Very late die state, Breen II late, with a strong die crack bisecting the reverse passing through the T in UNITED to the right side of the M in AMERICA. The right upright of the M is now at least 3 times as wide as normal and it is apparent the die is coming apart. A neat die state for a very rare variety, one of the toughest in the numbered Sheldon series. Graded F12 net VG7 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #24281. Del Bland says VG10 net VG7 and tied for CC#8. Our grade is F12+ sharpness net VG7. The attribution and Hixon-Reed-Ellsworth portion of the provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
