Lot 247

1794 S-51 R4 PCGS graded G4. Attractive glossy medium brown blending to darker chocolate brown in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and free of contact marks, just worn. The obverse is a bit sharper than the reverse, which is normal for the variety. The date is not strong but it is clear and easily readable but much of the legend outside the wreath is weak or missing. EDS with an uncracked obverse, the usual die state. In addition there is a mint-made indent just inside the dentils at the bottom of the reverse. This type of mint error is explained in detail on page 844 in Walter Breen's encyclopedia on early date large cents. Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade (obverse G5, reverse AG3, overall G4). Estimate Value $300 - UP

Realized $384
