Lot 211

1795 S-78 R1 Plain Edge VG10. A few points sharper but covered with very fine roughness on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive brown. No verdigris and the only notable contact marks are some old, dull scratches in the field behind the portrait and a dull diagonal scratch on the right side of the O in ONE to the left side of the C in CENT. This cent was struck twice and flipped over between the impressions. The first strike was positioned about 10% off center to K-9. The cent was then reinserted into the coining chamber but flipped over before being struck a second time, this one nearly centered between the dies. Strong evidence of the first strike shows on both sides including a complete 1795 date where the fraction should be on the second strike. A very rare type of double (or triple) mint error, and the error is obvious to the unaided eye. Noyes photo #38920. Estimate Value $2,500 - UP
