Sale 109

Lot 209

1795 S-76b R1 Plain Edge PCGS graded VF35. Glossy medium brown and chocolate with both tones delicately woodgrained on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth, free of any trace of corrosion or verdigris. No notable contact marks on either side. This cent was struck at least 3 times (even though the PCGS label says "Flipover Double Struck"). The first two strikes were nearly centered on the planchet but were offset by a 5-10 degree rotation between those impressions. This is clearly visible at AMER where the obverse cap is boldly doubled with a 1-2 millimeter separation between those impressions. The double struck planchet was then flipped over and struck once more slightly off center to K-10 but with all the designs on the planchet. Ample evidence of the undertype first two strikes is visible on the right half of both sides. An absolutely choice example of a spectacular mint error. Our grade is VF20 Choice. The attribution, "Mint Error: Flipover Double Struck," and Trollan provenance are all noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
