Lot 194

1794 S-65 R1 PCGS graded AU50. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with a small streak of dark toning on a strand of hair left of the jaw and a puff of steel toning on the jawline. No roughness or verdigris. The only notable marks are a planchet flake on the rim near the lowest curl (as struck) and a small nick on the forehead. E-MDS, Breen state II late. The die crack to the bottom of the 9 that identifies Breen's state III is not present but the die crack through the second A in AMERICA that forms in his state IV is clearly visible. Obviously some minor adjustments to his sequence of die cracks is required. This cent has excellent eye appeal in spite of the minor marks on the obverse, and the reverse is absolutely choice. Noyes photo #20737. Our grade is EF40. The attribution and Trollan provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 8 finer for the variety, 3 in 53, 4 in 55, 1 in 64. Estimate Value $4,500 - UP
Ex R. E. Naftzger, Jr.-Herman Halpern, Stack's 3/16/1988:91 (as EF45)-Stack's 1/1993:1096 (as EF45)-Chris McCawley 6/1993-Dan Trollan Collection.
