Lot 190

1794 NC-6 R8- NGC graded VF30. Glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth, void of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. However there are three dull, light scratches in the field before the portrait and a half dozen thinner, sharper scratches on the reverse, mostly inside the wreath around ONE CENT. Otherwise this cent is nearly choice with only a few trivial contact marks, none notable. Only three examples are known from this die paring mating the obverse die of S-64 & S-65 with a different reverse die that appears to have failed spectacularly, perhaps on the initial strike. All three of the NC-6 cents have significant swelling in the center of the reverse and a strong radial die crack from the rim right of the D in UNITED. This is the discovery coin for the variety and it is plated to show the variety in the Breen large cent encyclopedia and Noyes reference. Both sides are also plated on page 39 in the 1979 Tom Morley grading reference for 1794 cents. As you would expect it comes with a very nice provenance that includes some of the most important large cent collections formed over the last 100 years. Graded VF20 net F12 by Del Bland and tied for finest known. Noyes says VF25 sharpness net VG10 and tied for CC#1, his photo #20781. Our grade is VF20 sharpness net F12. The attribution and Mervis-Trollan provenance are noted on the NGC label. NGC population 1; the only example of the variety graded at both services. Estimate Value $60,000 - UP
