Lot 1831

Printing Plate. Union soldier and blacksmiths. Steel. 4 x 3 inches. Imprint of Continental Bank Note Company. Bright and lustrous light steel gray with slight golden tone. Two corners are broken off, one larger than the other, but neither affecting the design. A fine imprint below reads, "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1865 by the Continental Bank Note Co. in the Clerk's Office of the Districk Court of the United States for the Southern Districk of New York."

Included is: $5.00 Union Military Scrip, Topeka, Kansas of June 1, 1867 with the above vignette on the obverse. Printed by the Continental Bank Note Co. N.Y. with logo on bottom. Whitfich 422. Rarity-7. Crisp Uncirculated

The design features a Union soldier visiting two blacksmiths with a broken sabre needing repair. A fine signature of the engraver is seen at the lower left of the design, "F.O.C. Darley fecit."

Felix Octavius Carr Darley was an American-born engraver, born in Philadelphia in 1822. He was self taught, and moved to New York City to practice his trade in 1848. In 1852 he was elected an honorary member of the National Academy of Design, and as of 1856 he was an engraver for Toppan, Carpenter and Company, and later with American Bank Note Company. He died in Philadelphia in 1888.
