Lot 181

1794 S-58 R3 PCGS graded F12. Glossy medium chocolate and steel brown blending to olive brown in protected areas. No corrosion or verdigris, only light contact marks. The notable marks are a few light hairline scratches at the top of the obverse and a few more at the bottom of the reverse. Struck 15% off center to K-12 leaving LIBERTY and the fraction off the planchet. The date is bold. The exact die state is difficult to determine since the status of any die crack at UNIT is unknown. This cent is plated on page 841 in the Breen encyclopedia to illustrate the off-center type of mint error. Off-center large cents are a popular type of mint error, and examples dated 1794 are extremely rare. Noyes graded F15 sharpness net VG10, his photo #31444. Our grade is VG8. The attribution, provenance, and Off-Center Mint Error are all noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $8,000 - UP
