Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Lot 1432

1857-S. NGC graded AU-55. A nice untoned coin. Nice surfaces and original, with typical light nicks scattered over both sides. These were struck right at the peak of the Califnornia Gold Rush where most of the "easy" gold was found in the first couple of years, by 1857 the largest mines were in full operation and gold was flowing out of every source that it could be found. Production peaked in 1857, and started a long slow decline in 1858. Hence this $3 gold piece represents the historic heyday of that era in a most special way. Only 14,000 struck. Pop 28; 12 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7977) Estimate Value $5,500 - 6,000
