Lot 1126

1875-S/CC. Type 1 Reverse. FS-501. NGC graded MS-61. Nicely toned with deep golden hues on both sides. The strike is sharp and the traces of the underlying CC mintmark are clear with a loupe. It is quite curious that this mintmark blunder even happened, as coins were struck at both the San Francisco and Carson City branch mints in 1875. So how did this happen? Perhaps a Carson City reverse die ended up in San Francisco die shipping box, and somehow the mintmark was updated, another possibility is this occured in Philadelphia where too many "CC" dies were prepared, and one was swapped over to the San Francisco die group, with the addition of an S over the larger CC mintmark. What is clear is that this is one of the most popular and rarest of the overmintmark varieties, especially on such a prominate coin as the Trade dollar. Pop 8; 12 finer at NGC for the variety. Estimate Value $4,500 - 5,000
