Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 109

Lot 1123

1873. PCGS graded MS-65. Boldly struck with light hint of even gold tone over lustrous fields. The surfaces are satin smoth and nearly free of any distracting contact marks. This is the first year of issue of the Trade dollar, created specifically to compete in the Orient with the popular Mexcan silver coins of that era. Despite large numbers being shipped to China these never fully caught on, and after five years of production Trade dollars in 1879 were limited to proof coins struck for stateside collectors. Here is one of the first year's finest, boldly struck and retaining all its mint imparted elegance. Pop 12; 6 finer, 1 in 65+, 4 in 66, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 7031) Estimate Value $7,000 - UP
