Lot 1103

1798. Small eagle, 15 stars on obverse. B-2, BB-81, Rarity 3. NGC graded AU-53. Well struck with nice even antique gray toning. This is the only 1798 silver which shows 15 stars, all others show the standard 13 stars. Ironically, with Tennessee joining the Union as the 16th state in June of 1796, that likely confirms this die was engraved prior to that date--in early 1796, and it remained on the shelf until this point in 1798 when it had the last digit added to the date, and pressed into service. Furthermore, the reverse employs the Small Eagle design, which must have been to use this valuable finished die. Rarely are these found so well preserved and attractive. A scarce variety and major type coin that is needed by many collectors. Pop 2; 2 finer for the variety, 1 in 60, 1 in 63. Estimate Value $19,000 - UP
