Researched Group of Hero of the Soviet Union Major-General Sokolov Nikolay Vasilievich. Sokolov Nikolay Vasilievich (1899 – 1980), was a career Red Army officer. Started service in 1919, actively participated in Civil War. Graduated from military engineer’s school in 1922, and commander improvement courses in 1932. During WWII, distinguished himself in commanding critically important engineering works for Leningrad’s "Road of Life", strategic crossings of Neva, Visla, Dnestr and Dnepr Rivers. During crossing of Visla River in August 3-5 1944, his regiment built a bridge and managed to transfer tanks and ammunitions across to the enemy’s side, followed by two days of successfully repelling all the counter attacks. By decree of Sept. 23, 1944, "For outstanding leadership and skillful command of his pontoon-engineering regiment during crossing of Visla River and personal bravery" he was bestowed with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, with GOLD HSU Star #1992 and Order of Lenin #10986.
