The Celebration in San Francisco, in Commemoration of the Successful Laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable, Monday, September 27th, 1858. San Francisco, Sterett & Butler, 1858. Letter sheet, 16¾ x 11". Wood engraving and letterpress on blue paper. The sheet has a border made up of 35 small illustrations: four stars in the corner, thirty small state seals, and a portrait of George Washington at the top. Text on both sides of sheet describing the celebration. Larger illustrations in body of sheet include an image of horse-drawn carriages carrying 120 little girls dressed in white, representing all the States, and the principal European Nations; Rube Aldrich, just arrived, 120 days from St. Jo., Missouri; Adams, with his family of Native Californians; and the men of the Knickerbocker 5 Fire Company in procession behind a float of a small boat with cable coiled on its deck. Verso has two purple rubber stamps of "Kimball's California Glue" and "Water White Coal Oil / 20¢ a Gallon at Kimball's, 534 Valencia Street." Light toning, a few minor stains, and fold wear.
