[Rhode Island] 1768 Receipt for Spermaciti Candles and 1802 Port of Providence Import Document For a Ship Owned by Brown and Ives. Manuscript document, one page, 6 x 8½", Newport, Jan. 1, 1768. A receipt for "6 Boxes Spermacity Candles," bought by Messrs. Samuel & Wm. Vernon from James Robinson for £418.7. Spermaceti was the waxy substance found in the head cavity of the sperm whale and in the oils of other whales. Between 1768 and 1772, whale oil accounted for 53 percent of all sterling earned by direct exports to Great Britain from the northern colonies. Attractively matted and framed to 17½ x 16". With a partly-printed document, one page, 5 x 8¼", Port of Providence, District of Rhode-Island, June 9, 1802. Supervisor J. Dexter certifies that one pipe of brandy, containing 120 gallons, was imported from Malaga by Brown and Ives, in the Eliza. With embossed seal of Supervisor's Office; countersigned by Inspector W. Barton. Handsomely matted and framed to 14¾ x 17". Estimate Value $200 - UP
