A Petition to the King in Council. Francis Brerewood, Esq.; Against Lord Baltimore; Relating to an Estate in Maryland, c. 1768. Directed "To The King's most Excellent Majesty in Council, The Humble Petition of Francis Brerewood, of St. Martin's in the Fields in the County of Middlesex, Esq., 3 pages, printed on laid paper, 15 x 9¾". The petition involves a 10,000 acre tract of land called "Lord Baltimore's Gift," which Charles, Lord Baltimore, gave to his wife, Margaret Lady Baroness of Baltimore, in 1713 "on the North Side of the Main Falls of Gunpowder River." In 1731 Lady Margaret willed the land to her granddaughter, Charlotte Calvert. The debts of Charlotte's husband, Thomas Brerewood the Younger, complicated matters. Upon Thomas' death, his brother, Francis Brerewood, claims that he is the heir and that he is being cheated out of his inheritance by the present Lord Baltimore. We don't know the result of this interesting petition. Toning, some wear and reinforcement to folds, otherwise clean and in fine condition. Estimate Value $300 - UP
