Bell, Alexander Graham -- Letter Signed, Paying Tribute to Henry Ward Beecher, and 2nd Letter With Autograph Postscript. (1847-1922) Scottish-born American inventor, scientist, and teacher of the deaf; credited with the invention of the telephone. Letter signed "Alexander Graham Bell," one page, 9¼ x 7¾", on engraved letterhead, Washington, D.C., Mar. 25, 1887. To Edward W. Bock [sic], editor of The Brooklyn Magazine, upon the passing of Henry Ward Beecher (1813-87), a renowned clergyman and social reformer, and the brother of author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Bell touts Beecher as "a spokesman of patriotism and humanity" and hopes that "the example set by Mr. Beecher of bavery, honesty, public spirit, and geniality may be widely emulated." With a second letter, written and signed by an assistant, but bearing an autograph postscript signed with Bell's initials, one page, 8¾, Feb. 1, 1883, to Dr. B. Joy Jeffries, regarding specimens sent by Dr. Jeffries' nephew and saying that Dr. Gleason has arrived from Boston and is working on an "eye-exploring instrument." The holograph postscript says, "It has given me great pleasure to make the acquaintance of your nephew. I am sorry that I could show him so little attention during his short stay here and hope to have another opportunity of meeting him in the near future. The little girl is progressing as satisfactorily as we can hope. AGB." Matted with images of Bell, a plaque and biographical information and framed to an overall size of 23 x 27¼". Fine.
