Hoffman, Richard -- Autograph Manuscript Signed on the Transmission of Melodies From Culture to Culture. (1831-1909) English-born pianist and composer. Autograph manuscrpt signed, 5 pages, 9 x 5¾", in pencil, no place, no date. To the editor of "Century." Titled "How Cuban Dances become German Students Songs, and American ditties become Italian Mountainerrs melodies." With holograph corrections and at least one from the editor about the long title. Hoffman notes seeing two Italian pipers while sitting on the piazza at his seaside resort in New Hamshire and being disappointed that they were playing the tune of "Climbing up the golden Stairs," when he had been hoping for "something fresh from the Tyrol…" He gives a second example involving himself.
