Lot 86

1845 N-4 R1 Repunched 5 NGC graded MS65 Brown. Lustrous steel brown faded down from mint red with 25% of the mint color showing on the obverse, 15% on the reverse. A superior cent that offers outstanding eye appeal. The only marks worthy of mention are a thin nick hidden along the front edge of the neck, a small spot of darker toning between star 4 and the dentils, and traces of an old fingerprint between star 11 and the main curl. MDS, die state c. The die cracks at ST and TES are very light and the repunching on the 5 is clear. Has the look of a choice Red & Brown cent. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census for the die variety. Estimate Value $800 - UP
Ex Denis Loring 8/1996-R. S. Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:197-Jack Wadlington Collection.
