Lot 56

1813 S-293 R2 VF25. Sharpness EF45 but dark with extremely fine microscopic roughness under the frosty dark olive and steel toning. Flowline luster covers the protected areas on both sides. No verdigris. The only notable mark is a dull, thin scrape from star 4 to the ear, strongest on the cheek. Otherwise only a few microscopic marks of no importance. Latest die state with all the die cracks listed by Breen and a raised ridge around the entire reverse (his state IV). The tops of OF AME are strongly merged with the rim. The strike is quite uneven with significant weakness at stars 5-7 and above the head with similar weakness at UNITED and along the bottom of the wreath. The remainder of the designs are nicely impressed. Breen says the uneven strike was caused by dies out of proper axial alignment (the die faces not parallel). This is the Breen plate coin for the latest state (although the caption for the plate is incorrectly marked as state I instead of state IV on page 823 in his large cent encyclopedia). A neat cent. Estimate Value $750 - UP
