Lot 463

1857. PCGS graded Proof 65. Lovely old time dark blue toning on both sides. This has always been a rare coin, nearly a twin to the 1858 proof only dollar in terms of numbers struck. It is estimated that about 50 to 75 examples are known according to PCGS Pop Report. From these numbers we deduce that ths is one of the finer examples today, with just a couple of coins slightly finer. Furthermore the splendid old time toning adds to the allure of this important offering. As we know, the late 1850s is where proof coin collecting really took off, after years of producing zero to ten coins in Proof, demand suddenly rose to where dozens were needed. Mintages began to be formally recorded for proofs and as the word spread among collectors, the demand continued to grow. Thus this 1857 silver dollar is one of the last of the mavericks, where mintages are uncertain, and demand was still in its infancy. Today of course, any collector would desire to own a handsome coin like this gem! Pop 4; 2 finer, 1 in 65 Cameo, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 7000) Estimate Value $20,000 - 22,000
