Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 106

Lot 386

1916. PCGS graded MS-63. Nicely toned with pale golden hues over satiny luster. The strike is typical with slight softness on Liberty's head and the upper portion of her shield. Clean surfaces and pleasing in every reguard, especially considering the rarity of this issue. Curiously the release ofthe new design of Standing Liberty quarters was planned for 1917, but for unknown reasons production began with a modest issue of 1916 dated Standing Liberty quarters, no formal announcement was made and these 1916s were released with the first batches of 1917 Standing Liberty quarters. Thus most examples are circulated today, and finding a bright, fresh and lusterous coin like this is a tough proposition given the modest reported mintage. Popular key date. Only 52,000 struck (PCGS # 5704) Estimate Value $11,000 - 12,000
