Lot 313

1801. LM-2, Rarity 4. NGC graded MS-61. The half dimes of 1801 are quite intriguing. The vast majority seen are from the LM-2 (Valentine 1 and 2) die pairing. Die cracks soon appear, next the cracks disappear, and a whole new die crack forms. Hence these 1801 half dimes have long confused collector with their strange die progression. That's what makes this coin so important, it shows the second advanced die crack on the left side of the obverse sharp and clear. The strike is sharp too, with bold definition on Liberty's curls as well as on the eagle and his wing feathers. The surfaces are attractive for the grade, with ample luster to appease the specialist. For identification, there is a small dark planchet inclusion on the reverse through the shield. Nice even toning with golden hues on both sides. Only 27,760 struck. Pop 2; 1 finer in 63 for the variety and only 2 finer for the date at NGC. Estimate Value $15,000 - 16,000
