Lot 312

1797. 16 stars. LM-2, Rarity 4. NGC graded MS-65. First off, any Draped Bust coin with the Small Eagle reverse is scarce, these coins were issued over just a few short years in the late 1790s. Mint State examples are quite rare with this design combination, and Gems like this are prohibitively rare. Finding any example at the MS-65 grade level is a tremendous opportunity for the specialist. A powerful coin that is simply amazing to behold. The obverse shows full hair definition on Liberty, a feature that is rarely found even close to the depth of the curls seen here. Both sides are frosty and untoned with ample luster to please the eye. The reverse too, is sharp, with several of the breast feathers on the eagle present and struck up. Examination of the surfaces finds little evidence of contact, and the die work is expressed forcefully in every possible way. This is clearly one of the very finest of this variety and date, and a coin which will be a major highlight in any collection lucky enough to obtain it. Only 44,527 struck. Pop 2; 1 finer for the variety and 3 finer for the date at NGC. Estimate Value $50,000 - 60,000
