Antoninus Pius, AD 138-161. Gold Aureus (7.2g). Mint of Rome, AD 159-160. Laueate head of Pius right. Reverse: PIETATI AVG COS IIII. Pietas standing facing, head left, holding globe in extended right hand and child in her left arm; a child standing to either side, each raising right arm. RIC-302; BMCRE 984; Cohen 622; Calicó 1602. Perfectly struck on a full wide flan, pristine surfaces and lustrous. NGC graded Choice AU; Strike: 5/5, Surface: 4/5. Our grade. Mint State. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
Although the reverse depicts the goddess Pietas, it probably represents Faustina Junior, the daughter of Pius who later married the future emperor Marcus Aurelius in AD 147. She produced eight children but only three survived.
