Augustus. Silver Denarius (3.68 g), 27 BC-AD 14. Colonia Caesaraugusta(?), ca. 19/8 BC. Head of Augustus right, wearing oak wreath. Reverse: CAESAR AVGVSTVS, S P Q R above and below shield inscribed CL V flanked by laurel branches. RIC 36a; cf. BMC 354 (laureate); RSC 51. Untoned. Very Fine. Estimate Value $300 - 350
The reverse shows the clipeus virtutis, the shield of valor, decreed to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC. Like the corona civica, it was awarded for saving the life of a fellow citizen.
