Lot 138

1853 N-10 R1 Repunched Date PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous bright mint red fading to bluish steel brown on the highpoints, 75% of the red remaining. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a few tiny specks of darker steel toning on the obverse and a very shallow low spot on the neck plus another surrounding EN in CENT (caused by debris stuck on the die). The best identifying mark is a tiny speck of darker toning at the dentils under the right edge of the 8. MDS, die state b. Repunching is still visible under the 1 and inside the top of the 8. Our grade is MS64+, close to MS65. A variety that is common in mint state grades, but this is an especially nice example. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $750 - UP
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 1/29/2012:560-William Hamilton Collection (lot ticket included).
