Confederate Provisionals, Fredericksburg, Va., 1861, 5¢ Blue on Bluish on Small Mourning Cover from the Major Maury Correspondence. Fredericksburg 5¢ blue tied to mourning cover to Major Richard L Maury of the 24th Va Regt in Jubal Early's Brigade at Manassas Junction by light "Fredericksburg Va Paid Oct ?0" cancel. LIV ("V" placed over "X") roman numeral docketing as typical with this correspondence. Stamp creased as uaual due to the fragile paper and with small clip in bottom left corner. Envelope reduced at right. Maury became commander of the 24th Va during 1862 battle of Williamsburg when superior officers were wounded or killed. Fine appearing cover with only 24 recorded that were sent to Maury in the Crown survey of all Fredercksburg provisional covers. Other covers to Maury exist with different Confederate franking, most of which were mouring covers. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
