Nation, Carrie Amelia; Legendary, Radical, Hatchet-Wielding, Early Temperance Agitator (1846-1911). Carrie Nation was a 6 foot tall, 175 pound militant temperance agitator from Kansas and a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union whose crusade against liquor establishments prior to prohibition is legendary. Frequently photographed with her hatchet, she thought nothing of walking into a saloon, and smashing up the interior and stock while other crusaders sang hymns. In ten years time she was arrested some 30 times for "hatchetations". Bars everywhere put up signs, "All Nations Welcome But Carrie".

Very rare vintage original 9½ x 7" photo by Michoh and Davison of Topeka, Kansas, 1901, published by W. H. Buchanan, Chicago. Signed ("Carrie A. Nation") and inscribed "Your Loving Home Defender" in fountain ink, May 2, 1902". Beautifully matted and framed to 25 x 16" in gilt wood frame. Very fine. Estimate Value $900 - UP
