Lindbergh, Charles A. -- TLS to the Smithsonian Institution Re An Organ-Perfusion Apparatus He Was Developing. Typed letter signed "Charles A. Lindbergh," one page, 10 x 7½", Germany, Nov. 13, 1966. To John C. Widener, Exhibition Specialist at the Smithsonian Institution, thanking him for his "assistance and cooperation in relation to the plastic materials I needed to develop the organ-perfusion apparatus…your advice and demonstration saved me days of time….We are publishing a description in 'Cryobiology'." Matted with the transmittal envelope and attractively framed to an overall size of 23½ x 14". Very fine.

Lindbergh had long been interested in the workings of the heart. In the 1930s he joined with surgeon Alexis Carrel (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1912) to invent a perfusion pump which would keep tissues and organs alive outside of the body. The pump depended on glass tubes and the procedures used were so delicate that they lost popularity with the scientific community. Lindbergh's interest persisted in 1966. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP

Realized $640
