Bronze Ceremonial Incense Shovel, Early Roman Period. The batillum or incense shovel was a ritual object often found in Israel, to clean the lamps of the Menorah and scoop incense. Judaea Second Temple Period to post Bar Kochba Period 130 BCE - 150 CE The incense shovel became one of several symbols of Jewish faith. Flat pan measuring approx. 5½ x 4½" with a semi-cylindrical handle measuring 5½ for total length just over 11". Pressed, small circular designs inside pan, very small and short base legs. In impressive condition and nice patina. A very similar example was found in the Cave of Letters in the Dead Sea area in the mid-1960s and now on display at the Israel Museum.
