Lot 527

Greek: Two Ancient, High Karat Gold Adornments; Rare Roundel and Earring. Two fine, ancient, high karat pieces. First an impressive Thracian roundel ca. 1st Century AD of thin gold hammered into a design in the center that clearly reveals three quarters of a repoussed face, possibly a god, and intentionally fashioned to be a partial profile, surrounded by hammered patterned designs. Small loss at top where likely a loop existed to be sewn on a garment or worn with several others on a necklace. Roundel gleams and measures 37 mm in diameter, likely a bit flattened, but otherwise an absolute knockout. The other is a delicate earring consisting of a small hoop and a tiny roundel originally attached of of a repoussed side profile of a helmeted soldier, quite possibly Alexander The Great. Roundel and the loop measure 12 mm each, the roundel having a small bite at top where it used to dangle from the loop. Wonderful ancient pieces. Estimate Value $750 - UP
