Katz, Mané "Le Mur des Lamentations" (The Wailing Wall), Celebrated and Important Russian/French/Israeli Artist (1894-1962) Raised in an orthodox Jewish family in Russia, Mané Katz had been influenced by stories of Jewish mysticism, which is reflected in his paintings. After working briefly for Russian ballets, he moved to France to study with the likes of Marc Chagall. World War II began, and he was drafted by the French and then taken prisoner by the Germans. He escaped and traveled to the United States and remained until 1945, and then returned to Paris until the end of his career, painting portraits of rabbis and works of Jewish symbolism and themes. The Mané Katz Museum is in Haifa, Israel at a mountain top villa that was once the home of the artist. Offered is an oil on canvas painted (date unknown likely late 1930s) entitled La Mur des Lamentations showing dramatically posed abstract figures in front of The Wailing Wall. Utterly compelling and arresting in it use of colors and design, this is a signature piece by the artist and very much in his celebrated style. Oil measures 30 x 24" matted and framed in rag linen and gilt wood to 39 x 34". Painting is in overall excellent condition. Estimate Value $9,000 - UP
