Eads Bridge, St. Louis 1874 -- Collection of 20 + Commemorative Pieces, Many Antique. Eads Bridge, the St. Louis Landmark has been declared a National Historic Landmark. Opened in 1874, by James Buchannan Eads and financed by Andrew Carnegie, it was a road and rail bridge connecting St. Louis, Miss. and East St. Louis, Illinois and was one of the earliest long bridges built across the Mississippi and tall enough for steamboats to travel underneath. Bridge proved a spectacular feat of engineering and was celebrated and visited by millions. Offered is a collection of commemoratives, with some of the porcelain pieces certainly antique. Collection includes two beakers, two plates, cup/saucer, compote, mug (repaired) all made in Europe at the turn of the century as well as a metal antique pin tray. There are also mid-20th Century pieces which include two plates, two tankards and one beaker, photo paperweight and plate of gilt tin. Rounding out the collection, an antique book with pull out photos of the bridge and St. Louis and a brick removed during the renovation in 1995 and later, medals celebrating the centennial.
