Four Japanese Netsukes All Boasting Wonderful Craftsmanship. Netsuke are miniature carvings/sculptures that were invented in 17th-century Japan to serve a practical function. Since kimonos had no pockets, bags or boxes hung from the sash and were secured at the top by a carved, button-like toggle called a netsuke. Over time, however, netsukes evolved into objects of great artistic merit and craftsmanship. Offered are four fine examples of carved boxwood. The elder Japanese man intrigues with its exceptional detail carved from a single piece of wood, the staff he is carrying part of that single piece of wood. It stands 4" tall. But the gourd and Laughing Buddha exhibit fine craftsmanship and the near square piece is carved with lightly carved undulations representing waves, tiny metal particles representing sand with three tiny shells actually crafted by shell. All four are in wondeful condition. Estimate Value $300 - UP
