Very Fine Late 19th Century English School; -- Artist's Name Illegible, Student and Teacher. Staying After Class Late 19th Century English School, oil on canvas. Signed but artist's hand illegible. However due to the manufacturer of the stretched canvas stamped on verso W. URQUHART/ 157, HIGH STREET/ NOTTING HILL GATE/ 327, EDGWARE RD, LONDON W. we can date this work to about 1892-1895 based on the database of the National Portrait Gallery of British Art Suppliers 1650-1950. A charming work, a dedicated schoolmaster is tutoring a young lad likely having a problem solving a bit of arithmetic. Canvas measures 17 x 21" and is framed in gilt wood to 26 x 30". Frame has had some chips repaired and touch-up but overall compliments this 120 year work quite nicely. Artwork itself has been maintained beautifully and in excellent condition. Estimate Value $1,200 - UP
