Seltzer, O. C. -- Legendary Artist of the Frontier and Old West -- "Portrait of a Native American" (1877-1957) Considered a transition painter between those of the Old West such as Frederic Remington and Charles Russell to a later generation that painted only myth and imaginative work. Born and raised in Copenhagen, after his studies he and his mother emigrated to Great Falls, Montana. He worked as a cowboy and then as a machinist and locomotive repairman for the Great Northern Railway, often sketching the landscape in his spare time. In Great Falls, where he lived the remainder of his life, he met Charles Russell, and the two became close friends. Russell critiqued his art and gave him a lot of advice, and some critics think that much of Seltzer's work resembles Russell's. Offered is Portrait of a Native American a near mythic portrait suffused with great dignity and respect. We love how Seltzer allows the upper empty space to draw focus on the portrait. Charles Russell, while the more famous of the two Western artists, said that painting with Seltzer had greatly influenced his art in terms of color and values. Watercolor on paper, recently re-matted, is in excellent condition with only slight evidence of handling. Glorious colors. Estimate Value $2,800 - UP
