Payne, Edgar Alwin, Important Early 20th Century California Artist. Sailboats in Laguna (1883-1947) Edgar Payne proved one of the most important California artists in the early 20th Century. He settled in Laguna Beach, California after a very successful period in Chicago. Building a cottage, Payne decided he wanted to have an art gallery for exhibiting artists, and in 1920 he became the founder and first president of the Laguna Beach Art Association and the Gallery of Laguna Beach. After a time he did move to Los Angeles to be closer to his most important gallery source, Stendahl Gallery in the Ambassador Hotel. Offered is an 11 x 14" oil on board of sailboats in Laguna boasting an explosion of colors set against a gorgeous sky, the boats resplendent in burgundies, greens and creams. Recently framed in gilt wood 14 ½ x 18½" and is in excellent condition. A fantastic example of this great California artist. Estimate Value $4,000 - UP
