Mérida, Carlos; "Abstraccione Mexicana" One of Mexico's World Renowned Abstract and Non-Figurative Artists of the 20th Century (1891 - 1984) Carlos Mérida was born in Guatemala City in 1891. As a young man he traveled through Europe and ultimately settled in Mexico and became active in the Mexican mural school of painting. In 1927 Mérida began to paint non-figurative works of art, becoming one of the country's first and most celebrated non-figurative artists. He is most well known for his geometric paintings and his work offered here is an early example of his style entitiled Abstraccione Mexicana and is dated 1930 on verso. An arresting work, most especially the symbolism and composition with shockingly expressive colors. Oil on canvas, 24 x 20" framed to 32 x 28". Painting was professionally re-stretched and canvas reinforced in two small areas on verso but painting remains in excellent condition. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
