Luks, George Benjamin: Celebrated Early 20th Century American Illustrator and Painter; "Harbor Lights" (1867 - 1933) Harbor Lights Pennsylvania born artist who studied at The Pennsylvania Academy of Arts and also in several countries abroad. He returned to the states and promptly became an illustrator for the Philadelphia Press where in 1896 he was sent to Cuba as a war artist, captured by the Spaniards and condemned to death as a spy. Fortunately he was deported instead and landed in New York, cold, hungry and broke. But he resumed work as an illustrator and then quit to focus on his paintings full time capturing cityscapes all along the Eastern Seaboard. Offered is an absolutely beautiful example of his watercolors, a harbor scene (Boston?) captured at dusk gas lanterns aglow, the night sky in a swirl of purples and blues, the stars just beginning to peak through. Watercolor on paper, 10 x 7" masterfully matted and framed to 27 x 23". Luks' works are highly prized and we are pleased to offer one of his pieces at Goldberg Auctions for the very first time. In superior condition. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
