Worden, John L. -- Union Naval Officer Who Commanded the USS Monitor, 1865 ALS (1818-1897) Commanded the Union's only ironclad steamship, the USS Monitor, against the Confederate ironclad, Virginia, in the Battle of Hampton Roads, March 9, 1862. After a four-hour battle, during which neither ship could pierce the other's armor, both ships withdrew. Autograph letter signed "John L. Worden," one page, 7 x 5¼", Brooklyn, Feb. 11, 1865. Thanking Mrs. Temple for a package: "…it together with those sent to Capt Case have been placed in the hands of Capt Washburne, who charges himself with their safe delivery unto Temple's hands." He regrets that Temple's health is not good and sends affectionate remembrances. In a postscript he notes that Temple's medical examination is probably antecedent to his promotion. Letter is inlaid into a border; paper is brittle and unevenly toned, with edge chips, one small hole affecting one letter, water stains on lower border, and some repairs on verso. Still, a war-date letter from a historic commander. Estimate Value $200 - UP
