Freud, Sigmund -- Professor Dr. Freud Agrees to Write an Article on "the progress of Psychoanalysis" for the Encyclopedia Britannica (1856-1939) Founder of psychoanalysis. Autograph letter signed "Freud," one page, on paper engraved "Prof. Dr. Freud" at upper left, and "Wien IX., Berggasse 19" at upper right, 9 x 5¾, Semmering (Austria), Villa Schüler, Sept. 13, 1925. The letter is written to Franklin Henry Hooper (1862-1940) who was managing editor of the very famous 11th edition (1910-11) of the Encyclopædia Britannica and was U.S. editor for the 12th, 13th, and 14th editions; he took over as editor in chief in 1932 upon the death of his brother, Horace Everett Hooper.

Freud writes in English: "Dear Sir I am glad to accept your proposal to give you an article on the progress of Psychoanalysis for the new volumes of the E.B. But I see one difficulty which I trust you will abolish by your answer. The E.B. of 1910 has no article on Psychoanalysis, does not even mention its existence. Can I restrict my report to the progress made since 1910, when the reader is not informed of the condition before that term? Yours most sincerely / Freud." Paper is toned overall, some creasing around edges, and one edge tear at left margin touching one letter. The letter is boldly penned and signed. Matted and framed to 11¾ x 9¼". Estimate Value $5,000 - UP
