Dix, Dorothea -- Autograph Letter Signed (1802-1887) Author, teacher and reformer whose efforts on behalf of the mentally ill and prisoners helped create dozens of new institutions in the United States and in Europe. During the Civil War, she was appointed to organize and outfit the Union Army hospitals and to serve as superintendent of women nurses. Autograph letter signed "D.L. Dix," 3 pages on a bifolium, 7½ x 5", Philadelphia, Aug 29, no year [1820s?]. To Thomas R. Stephens: "Looking over Dr. Hare's Bookcases in this city--I observed and have examined a work bearing the title of 'Stephen's American Register;' 'conducted' …'by James Stryker'…he or yr. self might have pleasure and do good, by adding so interesting a publication to the State Hospital Library at Trenton….you must fully appreciate the value of Books for the care of the convalescent patients."
