Frederick II, Called "Frederick the Great" -- Letter Signed to His Minister of Finance (1712-86) King of Prussia (1740-86). Brilliant military campaigner who made Prussia the foremost military power in Europe. Known for his patronage of the arts and the Enlightenment, he preferred the French language and arts. The French writer and philosopher Voltaire was a great favorite. Letter signed, one page, in German, 9½ x 7½", Potsdam, April 25, 1749. To his minister of finance, von Marschall, informing him that Herr von Heydebrandt (Minister of Posts) is ill and must be temporarily relieved from his duties. Frederick then instructs von Marschall to take on the duties of the ill man as needed in order to keep the accounts current and correct. Von Heydebrandt was satirically referred to as "the uncrowned King of Prussia" by his detractors. Light age toning, with tiny tape remnants on verso at upper corners. Frederick's signature is large.
